How Effective Are Portacool Evaporative Coolers?

If you are evaluating cooling options, you should be considering an evaporative cooler. It’s quite likely that you’re attracted by all the benefits evaporative coolers offer. You like the energy efficiency, the ease of transport, the lack of dangerous chemicals, and the fact that they are so much cheaper.

In the end, the effectiveness of the cooler is the main factor in making your decision. Therefore, you want to know whether an evaporative cooler will be an effective choice for your cooling application. Here’s what you need to know about the effectiveness of this solution.

Portacool Evaporative Coolers Can Be Highly Effective

The truth is that evaporative coolers can be highly effective under the right conditions. An evaporative cooler uses energy from hot air to evaporate water. This evaporation cools the air. To maximize effectiveness, the air should be hot and dry to encourage evaporation.

Under these conditions, evaporative coolers can drop the actual air temperature by 30 degrees Fahrenheit (e.g., from 100 degrees to 70 degrees). And the air can feel even cooler than the actual temperature because the cooled air has more water in it to help remove more heat from your body without feeling humid. If you’re standing in front of the evaporative cooler, the moving air can easily make it feel an additional five degrees cooler or more. A short time of that, and you might be wanting to put on a sweater!

Portacool Evaporative Coolers Are Effective in Most Conditions

Portacool evaporative coolerBut what about when the temperature is lower, and the humidity is higher? Although conventional wisdom is that evaporative coolers don’t work in humid conditions, they can be quite effective even when the humidity is high.

At our Center, Texas manufacturing plant, we are located near the Louisiana border, which means we know a thing or two about hot, humid conditions. And we also know that our evaporative coolers make a difference even here. We also know that we have clients across the South who use our coolers in conditions that are about as hot and humid as you will get: even in central Florida. While the air might not get as cool, even in these conditions, you might see a drop of 13 degrees or so, with additional cooling thanks to the moving air.

The Design Can Make All the Difference

It’s also important to note that the design of an evaporative cooler can make a big difference. There’s a theoretical limit to how much an evaporative cooler can drop the air temperature. A well-designed evaporative cooler might achieve as much as 95% of that temperature drop. A poorly designed evaporative cooler might reach only 50% of that temperature drop.

In other words, it’s important to choose your evaporative cooler wisely. You might get nearly twice as much cooling from a high-quality evaporative cooler than you get from a low-quality one.

At Portacool, we have more than 30 years of experience making evaporative coolers, and we’ve only gotten better at it over this time. We have taken the lessons we’ve learned, combined with feedback from our clients, to design better evaporative coolers. We maintain that quality by continuing to manufacture all our coolers in the USA. In addition, we only use evaporative media from our subsidiary, Kuul, which is the only evaporative media made in the USA.

Our quality means that our evaporative coolers are in demand across the country and around the world. We now have distributors in all 50 states and in 54 countries.
