Tailgating is where the true school spirit and camaraderie shines through, as people gather with friends new and old to watch games and cheer their teams on to victory. There are often painted faces, color-coordinated outfits, and lots of cheers. Some people may even follow certain rituals, such as wearing the same lucky jersey or sharing the same pre-game toast and chant. It can be a fantastic way to support teams, but when the activity is held outside in the sunshine, it’s important to take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses so you can focus on the big game.

You might be careful about doing specific rituals to improve your team’s chance of winning, but you shouldn’t take ANY chances on your own safety while you’re enjoying the game out in the heat. While football games can get hearts racing and adrenaline pumping, you don’t want to be uncomfortable – or worse, unsafe. Thankfully, there are a few tried-and-true rituals that you can use to stay safe and cool while tailgating before a game:

Stay hydrated by drinking water before, during, and after game day activities
Set up a tent for shade from the direct sunlight
Wrap a cool towel around the back of your neck, especially if you feel like you’re getting overheated
Pack on the SPF to protect you from lingering effects of the sun
